2016 Champions League – Round of 16 – 2nd Legs

champions league

The Champions League round of 16 2nd legs continue this week with some outcomes more certain than others. It’s not impossible, but Arsenal look destined to be knocked out once again in the round of 16 when they head to Barcelona with a 2 goal disadvantage. Similarly for Dynamo Kyiv they have given Manchester City a 2 away goal lead which looks highly unlikely that they can overcome that. Our other two fixtures though look a lot more promising in terms of some nail biting football. Atletico and PSV drew nil all in their first leg given both a chance at progressing even if Atletico have the advantage of home ground this week. Perhaps the biggest match will be Bayern looking to push through to the next stage against Juventus who fought back strongly to leave things level at 2-2 though those 2 away goals for Bayern could prove to be very crucial.

**Odds from Sportsbet as at 15th March

Manchester City ($1.5) versus Dynamo Kyiv ($6.5), Draw ($4.2)

1st Leg result: Dynamo 1 – 3 Manchester City
Manchester City look to have an insurmountable lead ahead of the 2nd leg and with a 2 away goal lead they should not be losing this. With such an advantage it’ll no doubt see Dynamo push hard for goals but in the end that is something that will give City the advantage. With the disappointment of a nil all draw at the weekend with Norwich, City will be keen to continue their run in the Champions League knowing that their title bid looks over now. For Dynamo no matter what form they are in I can’t see them progressing to the next round. Sure they have a chance of perhaps getting a draw here at best but City should be winning this regardless.

Predicted score: Manchester City 2-1
Best Bet: Over 2.5 goals at $1.73 (80%)
Next Best: Manchester City to win at $1.5

Atletico Madrid ($1.3) versus PSV ($10), Draw ($5.5)

1st Leg result: PSV 0 – 0 Atletico
No goals in the first leg between these two but I’m sure Atletico will be the more likely to push on to the next stage in this one. They couldn’t take advantage of an extra man in the first leg with PSV managing to hold on for a draw but this one should be an inevitable flow on from that game with a break through. Home ground advantage and 4 straight league wins with just the 1 goal conceded leaves them in great form ahead of this leg. I’d still expect PSV to be pretty competitive here because they are certainly still in this contest and will have every chance however to go one way or the other I’m always going to go with Atletico at home in this one.

Predicted score: Atletico Madrid 1-0
Best Bet: Under 2.5 goals at $1.85 (80%)
Next Best: Atletico to win to Nil at $1.83

Barcelona ($1.22) versus Arsenal ($11), Draw ($7)

1st Leg result: Arsenal 0 – 2 Barcelona
They were outclassed and outplayed in the first leg and I’d expect that for Arsenal they’ll receive more of the same when they head to Barcelona. The Spanish giants are on a 37 game undefeated streak in all competitions and whilst some may say that means they are closer to winning than losing, it’s hard to fathom anything but a Barcelona win in this one. The other compounding issue for Arsenal here is that they are in a bit of dip in form. They’ve won just once in their last 7 in all competitions which was away to Hull in the FA Cup and I just can’t see how they will be able to turn that form around against the best performed football team this season. I’m sure they will have moments and Barcelona may not need to go in top gear but in the end they’ll only need to change up a couple gears with that ridiculous front line of Neymar, Suarez, and Messi.

Predicted score: Barcelona 3-0
Best Bet: Barcelona Half-time/Full-time at $1.62 (90%)
Next Best: Barcelona to win both halves at $2.25

Bayern Munich ($1.44) versus Juventus ($7.5), Draw ($4.5)

1st Leg result: Juventus 2 – 2 Bayern Munich
Bayern had the game at the scruff of the neck in the first leg only to allow Juventus to fight back for a 2-2 draw. For the most part they controlled the contest throughout and could have been much further ahead but now they have to close out the game at home against a Juventus side that will be buoyed by their first leg performance. I’d expect this game to show case plenty of fight from Juventus but I can’t help but see that Bayern will remain switched on for the full 90 minutes here instead of just half a game.

Predicted score: Bayern Munich 2-0
Best Bet:  Bayern to lead at Half-Time at $1.83 (70%)
Next Best: A goal scored in both halves – yes at $1.55

As an Australian growing up AFL was always my no.1 sport especially given I was lucky enough to grow up a few blocks from Carlton’s home ground, Princes Park, where I was lucky enough to attend many games. That’s where my passion for sport began but it was until the early 2000’s when I discovered a real passion for football with the Socceroos 2002 World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay accelerating my football journey. From there I began to follow the Premier League and haven’t looked back since. These days I’m a massive Tottenham fan where I’ve enjoyed many sleepless nights religiously watching them without missing a game despite many roller coaster feelings. There’s just something magical and glamorous when you watch the EPL and knowing the Profits owners Drew and Euan through studies, I’m now lucky enough to be able to share my thoughts on each game each week of the season.
