Makarova vs Alexandrova
In my tweets earlier in the year I made mention of two particular players on the women’s side that are currently outside the top 100, but will push their way inside the top 100 as players to watch. Those two players were Nina Stojanovic and Ekaterina Alexandrova. We have seen last fortnight was Stojanovic has been capable of achieving, now it is time for Alexandrova.
Makarova has not been in excellent form of late, notably being unable to take a set from Doi and Strycova over the last fortnight. She also struggled late last year in the indoor circuit, finding herself down to Gibbs (who served for the first set), amongst some straight set losses against quality players.
Alexandrova had an exceptional finish to 2016, culminating in a Challenger title in Limoges, with wins over Voskoboeva, Parmentier, Zanevska, Cornet and Garcia. Alexandrova hits with force, and on her day is exceptionally good to watch. What she also does is hit the ball quite flat, which may cause Makarova some trouble here. Makarova is quite impressive when it comes to hitting balls with high spin, so this may not be a great matchup for Makarova here. It also seems as though her serve has lost a bit over the last 6 months as well.
Personally, I am happy to have a go at the odds on offer here for Alexandrova. I have her rated $2.30 here.
