Welcome to another long NBA season. It is great to have NBA here once again, but it is also important to take things very slowly. It is a long season so there is no need to launch into a high volume of plays early.

Chris Paul Total Assists

I think this is a low number for Chris, considering his early season form, pre-season form and form against the Lakers last year. Let’s break it down a little bit:

  • Paul averaged 13.3 assists per game against the Lakers last season across their four matches.
  • Paul averages 12.33 assists per game in the first three matches of last season, averaging 34 minutes per game.
  • Paul averaged 10.2 assists per game in wins last season.

All these stats are a testament to Paul’s ability to rack up assists, and quickly. The inside presence of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, coupled with the perimeter shooting that includes Redick, Dudley, Jamison, Barnes and of course Crawford means there are a number of very decent options. With Dwight Howard gone from the match-up from last season, I would expect Paul to be getting the ball to Griffin and Jordan at every opportunity early, especially as Kaman has a tendency to give up cheap fouls early.

I am happy to settle on the over 9.5 assists here for Chris Paul. As will all bets, there is an element of risk. The main risks are a massive blowout for the Clips, and if Paul doesn’t surpass the total early we are in trouble. The other is Darren Collison. He has been injured however I anticipate (and reports say) he is playing. You have to wonder if he will be eased into the season, meaning a couple of extra minutes for CP3 tonight.
