Nicky Henderson endured a memorable day at Kempton landing a four-timer across the card, with Darlan emerging as a real Champion Hurdle contender. Despite such a performance it was Sam Waley-Cohan and Long Run that stole the show for Nicky Henderson, regaining his crown in the King George VI Chase.
Many pundits argued that Kauto Star had broke the horses heart when clinging on to victory here last season in an unbelievable climax. Since, Long Run was comprehensively outstayed in the Gold Cup and brushed aside by Silvianiaco Conti on his reappearance. This time however, was to be his time to again shine on the big stage. Battling back to nail Captain Chris in the shadow of the post, it seemed there was still life in Long Run yet. In response the bookmakers left him as an unchanged 8/1 shot for the Gold Cup in March. The heavy ground made the 3m trip a gruelling stamina test but it was one Long Run was equal too. It was such a brave performance given the dreadful mistake he made over the last, but Sam never gave up and eventually was rewarded.
