The undoubted highlight of the week was SIMONSIG sauntering to an easy success on his chasing debut at Ascot yesterday. It was a real taking display of precision jumping, one that saw him shorten even further for the Arkle at Cheltenham in a little over three months time. Coral shortened him up from as big as 3/1 into 2’s, and now clear favourite from Captain Conan and Overturn at 6’s.
Barry Geraghty wasn’t shy in asking up the six-year-old at his fences and he didn’t duck the issue, jumping boldly and fluently throughout. Barry had a tight grip on him for a lot of the race but when he eased the reign Simonsig showed a glimpse of his potential. Sent off the odds-on favourite, his victory was inevitable and it was made an almost certainty when Act Of Kalanisi and Dare Me departed at the same fence in the back straight leaving Nicky Henderson’s charge to dictate from Sulphius, who ran a huge race to his credit collecting £6,000 prize money for placing.
