SOLE POWER endured a significant drop in class yesterday, participating in a listed race, the Scarbrough Stakes at Doncaster. The top-flight sprinter hadn’t won in eleven starts and was becoming inevitably frustrating. Since running out a shock 100-1 winner of the 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes at York, the five-year-old had struck just once, landing the Temple Stakes at Haydock in May of last year. Edward Lynam’s gelding has however competed with the very best, and has run some cracking races in defeat. We still held him in the highest regard and when we saw him entered for this listed event we couldn’t quite believe it, along with a price of 9/4 that drifted to 11/4 before the off! The drift came about when there was a late afternoon downpour, but he possessed so much more class than his competitors and Johnny Murtagh got the most out of him with a perfectly timed explosive run leaving the field standing. He was still a long way back heading towards the last of five furlongs, but did not panic, angled his mount towards the stands side and Sole Power quickly found top gear. He seemed to really benefit from the cover Murtagh gave him and may well have benefited from more when he disappointed in the Nunthorpe. Edward Lynam said: “The horse has a very good turn of foot and all going well he will go for the Abbaye if the ground is right, and then on to Hong Kong as Johnny thinks he will be perfect to race over there. After that he’d probably go back to Dubai.”
